What is Hypertrophy?
Hypertrophy is the scientific word for muscle growth. In simple terms, it is the process of increasing the size of your muscles through structured training. Bigger muscles do not always mean equal strength gains, but combining strength and hypertrophy training often delivers the best physique and performance.
At ReFormd Personal Training in Singapore, our trainers design programmes to help you maximise hypertrophy while staying safe and consistent.
How Muscles Actually Grow
When you train, your muscles undergo muscle protein synthesis, repairing and adapting to stress by becoming thicker and stronger.
Types of Hypertrophy:
- Parallel Hypertrophy: The main way muscles increase in size following resistance training. Enlarging muscle fibers by adding contractile units side by side.
- Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy: Increasing glycogen and fluid inside the muscle, creating fuller-looking muscles. It’s hypothesised to be training-specific, with lighter-load, higher-repetition training promoting greater accumulation of sarcoplasmic fractions.
- Serial Hypertrophy: Less common, involving the addition of sarcomeres in a row.
Some talk about hyperplasia (new fibers forming), but in humans, this remains minimal. The main driver is still making your existing muscle fibers larger.
The Three Drivers of Muscle Growth
- Mechanical Tension: The primary driving force for hypertrophy. Heavy, under-controlled lifting that tells the body to adapt and grow.
- Metabolic Stress: That “burn” you feel from moderate-to-high rep sets builds up growth-stimulating metabolites.
- Muscle Damage: Small amounts of microtears can spark rebuilding. Too much damage, however, slows recovery and can negatively impact growth.Put Your “Why” Into Practice
Why Results Differ Between People
- Genetics: Shapes growth potential and muscle distribution.
- Age: Growth is easiest in your 20s to 30s, but possible at all ages with the right plan.
- Sex: Men build more absolute muscle, but women progress just as effectively relative to their size.
- Training History: Beginners adapt quickly, while experienced lifters need smarter programming.
Nutrition for Hypertrophy
You cannot out-train poor nutrition. For optimal muscle growth in Singapore’s busy lifestyle, we emphasise:
- Slight calorie surplus to fuel growth. An energy surplus guarantees sufficient nutrients.
- Optimal muscle is built with optimal nutrition at every meal, including protein for tissue building, carbohydrates for energy, and good fats for recovery and overall health.
